2014 IFBB WORLD CLASSIC BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS – PREVIEW

by Andrew Michalak

This year’s IFBB last international event before Christmas will be held the upcoming weekend in La Nucia, Spain. It includes the 2014 World Classic Bodybuilding Championships as well as the Bikini Fitness and Men’s Physique World Cup.

La Nucia (from the Arabic word Naziha - "delicious") is famous from its very modern sport complex. It includes a magnificent “Auditorium of the Mediterranean” constructed just a few years ago. The city was awarded with the title of the “2012 European City for Sport” by the European Parliament.

Competitors, officials and guests will be accommodated in the hotels located in the Poniente Beach in Benidorm, at the Avenida Armada Española, so beautiful views and relax guaranteed and it is a good idea to stay there few days more “recharging your batteries” for the next year. Detailed information in the Inspection Report.

World Classic Bodybuilding Championships
For me, the biggest sensation are big teams from China (altogether 19 athletes), Congo and Gambia. According to the current IFBB Rules, 5 body height categories will be run: China re-entered the IFBB international events this year, hosting the Ben Weider Diamond Cup and sending a powerful team to the Asian Beach Games. This will be next test of their potentials, show in the battle against top world athletes. Congo and Gambia will start their IFBB international activity if they come (sometimes they failed). It would be intriguing to see athletes from these countries.

Up to 168 cm:

Very tough battle could be expected as three top stars entered this class: 2012 world champion Sungwon Kang (Korea), 2013 world champion Seyed Mirnoorollahi (Iran) and 2013 Worlds runner-up Kikwan Seol (Korea). All three recently met at the Asian Beach Games, with Mirnoorollahi taking the 2nd place, ahead of Seol and Kang. Will any other competitors be able to challenge them? If any, it could be 2013 Worlds finalist Robert Horvat (Croatia) or the 2011 top ten player Meelis Susi (Estonia). Other athletes from Brazil, Japan and Spain are rather new faces.

Up to 171 cm:

Around full semifinal (some athletes didn’t provide their categories) and once again three former world champions: Javad Soltani (2012 – Iran), Yeonseok Yang (2010 – Korea) and Luigi Di Carlo (2007 – Italy). Soltani is in his best days winning also the latest Asian Beach Games, while Yang took the 3rd position there. But we know that at bodybuilding contest the body condition of the final day is a decisive factor, so who knows? Di Carlo was less successful in the recent years but there will be more serious challengers: 2013 Worlds finalists: Denis Bashkatov (Russia) and Peep Reinart (Estonia), 2009 Worlds bronze medal winner Fernando Gornals (Spain), 2014 South American champion Yens Bonilla (Ecuador), 2014 European champion Jesus Rodal (Spain) and 2014 Weider Cup winner Ran Maorong (China). Many serious candidates for medals!

Up to 175 cm:

Full semifinal, three medals and four famous stars fighting for them: 2012 world champion Jehyung Ryu (Korea), 2014 European champion and Arnold Europe 2nd place winner Tomas Bendoraitis (Lithuania), 2013 Arnold Europe 3rd place winner and 2014 Eastern European Championships runner-up Artem Pyari (Russia) plus one new, very gifted athlete: 2014 Weider Cup winner Kang Chen (China). He won the latest Asian Beach Games outpointed the world champion Jehyung Ryu!
Plus the current South American Championships runner-up Angelo Ronquillo (Ecuador) and two top world masters champions: 2014 world champion (over 50) Petr Boar (Czech Republic) and 2014 Worlds runner-up (40-49) Bogdan Nowakowski (Poland). This will be an extremely excited battle!

Up to 180 cm:

Around 20 competitors but only one mega star: 2013 European Championshos overall winner and 2014 Arnold USA overall winner Serhii Gorenkov (Ukraine). Will she add to his collection the next overall title? Who will try to stop him? 2013 Arnold Europe winner Andrey Shmidt (Russia) and 2013 Worlds runner-up Ali Emre (then Turkey, now Azerbaijan) are very demanding opponents. Plus semifinalist of various international events from the past two years: Manuel Plachner (Austria), Patricio Martin and Oscar Gonzalez (both of Spain), Cristian Harten and Matías Monteagudo (both of Argentina). Or, maybe, someone from among new faces: Vinicius Ramos (Brazil), Mojtaba Arzeshmand (Iran), Deimantas Sladkevicius (Lithuania), Pawel Drozdowski (Poland)? Brazil entered many new competitors but they have already proved that their new athletes are of the top quality (like at the recent World Fitness Championships in Montreal).

Over 180 cm:

Around 20 athletes and a couple of great stars. Among them three former world champions: Andriy Kukharchuk (2013 – Ukraine), Lubos Malinak (2012 – Slovakia) and Mateusz Kolkowski (2011 – Poland). Kukharchuk is so phenomenal bodybuilder who can be successful in both: extreme and classic bodybuilding. A month ago he won silver medal at the 2014 World (Extreme) Bodybuilding Championships in Brasilia in 95 kg category. Dropping 8 kg of muscles he will be able to compete in La Nucia. Then the 2014 Arnold Europe overall winner Sergei Khalepo (Russia) and his team-mate: 2013 and 2014 Arnold Europe 3rd place winner Yuri Leinvald. Moreover, 2013 Worlds bronze medal winner Tomasz Kornalewski (Poland), 2011 and 2012 Arnold Europe top three Wastecley Costa Lima (Spain), who will come back this year. Plus 2011 Worlds finalist Olaf Michaelis (Germany) and 20-14 European Championships runner-up Dražen Vrbančić (Croatia). Category packed with the stars, no clear predictions possible!

Bikini World Cup

Up to 160 cm: three well-known athletes from Spain: 2014 Worlds bronze medal winner Maria Paulete Aranguren, 2014 Arnold Europe 3rd place winner Carla Fernandez and finalist of many top international contests: Inmaculada Gual.

Up to 163 cm: the latest Weider Cup runner-up Xiang Zaihua (China) plus rising stars from Portugal: Elsa Pena and Spain: Jenifer Rocio.

Up to 166 cm: 2014 European Championships runner-up and 2014 Amateur Bikini Olympia runner-up Karina Skowronska (United Kingdom) against top Weider Cup athletes from China: Chen Siyu (the winner), Mou Cong (bodyfitness winner), Chen Qiuling and Zhong Xinjuan.

Up to 169 cm: 2014 Arnold Europe 3rd place winner Elvira Cara (Moldova) against a group of top Chinese competitors: Su Rui (2nd place at the Weider Cup), Fan Shuhui (2nd place in bodyfitness at the Weider Cup) and Zhao Shiliu. Plus rising styars from Congo and Spain.

Up to 172 cm: one mega star: current world champion as well as European Championships and Amateur Olympia overall winner Alla Semenova (Ukraine). If in shape, nobody could stop her. The other well-known athletes: Kristine Brokane (Latvia) and Sara Diaz Rodriguez (Spain).

Over 172 cm: interesting combat of the 2014 Grand Prix Pepa overall winner Kristina Narbutaityte (Lithuania) and the 2014 world junior overall winner Yevheniia Suprun (Ukraine). Plus 2014 Arnold Europe top ten Markéta Tůmová (Czech Republic) and more competitors from Spain.

Men’s Physique World Cup

Up to 172 cm: two finalists of the latest European Championships: Alexis Gonzalez and Miguel Angulo.

Up to 175 cm: probably, the greatest star of this World Cup: 2014 World Championships and 2014 European Championships runner-up Henrique De Carvalho (France). Good opportunity to be at the top, at least.

Up to 178 cm: many finalists and semifinalists of different international events, like Ilya Tsarev (Russia) – 2014 Eastern European Championships, David Fillol (Spain) – 2014 Arnold Europe or Said Alghifary (Sweden) – 2013 Weider Cup.

Up to 181 cm: new faces from Congo, Portugal and Ukraine.

Over 181 cm: two top stars: 2014 Arnold Europe winner Alberto Hiciano (Spain) and 2014 European Championships bronze medal winner Anthony Amar (France). Plus 2014 Partner’s Cup winner Miroslav Kadlec (Czech Republic).

Some fantastic news for CBB brought by president Santonja:

IFBB President Dr. Rafael Santonja delivered some very important news during the Technical Meeting, related to the IFBB concept of promoting classic bodybuilding as the future Olympic sport: The first step of this big plan was very positive: there were no positive doping tests at the latest Asian Beach Games in Thailand. Following this great news, IFBB will do its best to obtain the same result at the 1st European Games to be held next year in Baku, Azerbaijan, where 5 classic bodybuilding categories will be run (no more than 3 competitors per country will be accepted).

At the 2015 World Classic Bodybuilding Championships (bid from Guatemala) all three medal winners in each category will be drug tested.

Then, classic bodybuilding will be included in the 2017 World Beach Games to be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Looks great and we all: competitors, coaches, judges and officials should do our best to make this plan successful.
