IFBB shares some pre-show information;

NEXT WEEKEND: THE 66TH IFBB MEN’S WORLDS IN ECUADOR

by Andrew Michalak

Altogether, there are four IFBB World Championships staged every autumn but the Men’s Worlds have the longest tradition, reaching the IFBB beginnings in 1946. They have their special “flavor” and prestige and the biggest range in the world as men’s competitive bodybuilding – in contrary to women’s physique sports – are practiced in all regions and all continents.

But this year’s 66th IFBB World Men’s Championships have their special dimension: will be the first IFBB Men’s Worlds to be held in South America! This event reflects not only the balanced development of bodybuilding all over the world but also the organizational and financial possibilities as well as high standards of South American bodybuilding and sports, in general. Taking into account that South America will be the host of the 2013 World Games, 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, Mr. Andres Botero, an IOC member from Colombia, has said - “I think this is the decade of Latin America, a change for the continent, an opportunity to show the world we are able to organize an event of great importance.”

It’s a pleasure, that IFBB and bodybuilding will have its considerable input into this “Latin American sport decade”.

The beginnings of bodybuilding development in Ecuador reaches early 1970s and it was formally legalized in 1983, when Prof. Angel Coba registered their National Bodybuilding Federation. Then Ecuadorian Bodybuilding Federation hosted many top continental events, included South American and Latin American Championship, South American and Bolivarian Games.

The most successful athlete and “media face” of Ecuadorian bodybuilding is Mr. Fausto Caicedo – nine-time national champion, eight-time South American champion and Pan American overall champion and Arnold Amateur Championships finalist. Among the other top Ecuadorian bodybuilders we can see: multi-time continental champion and the Men’s Worlds top ten Marco Aviles, continental champion Alfredo Valencia, continental champion and 2011 Men’s Worlds finalist Carlos Arcentales.

The 2012 World Championship will be a successful event thanks to the support of the Ministry of Sport, municipality of Guayaquil and private enterprises. It is the first time in the 66-year history of the IFBB, that the World Men’s Championship takes place in South America. The Ecuadorian Federation aims to provide a wonderful event that will be remembered forever in the name of all of South American Bodybuilding Family.” – Ecuadorian and South American Federations President Juan Paredes told us.

Why in Guayaquil? Guayaquil, founded in 1538 by the Spanish conqueror Francisco de Orellana, is the largest city in Ecuador and the economic capital of the country. It is also known as "The Pearl of the Pacific", attracting tourists from all parts of the world. Gulf, monuments, parks, museums, modern hotels, the Guayas River, and vibrant nightlife are just some of the many attractions of this city.

There are three official hotels for the Championships:

- The Sheraton Hotel

- The Sonesta Hotel

- The Howard Johnson Hotel

They are located within 2 minutes walking distance from each other. But the main activities, like the registration, weigh-in, and the World Congress, will all happen in the Sheraton Hotel. All meals for officials and athletes will also be served in the Sheraton Hotel.
